FSIA Award of Excellence

22 October 2015

We are very proud to have been involved with this wonderful Project. The panel of adjudicators had this to say:

"Gallery on Leviseur is the first of its kind in Bloemfontein a gallery both contemporary in atmosphere and design. The white cube has been around for ages, ..."

A graduate of UFS, Sergio Nunes has designed a bold new building on an important corner site at the edge of the inner city. Mobilizing the acute geometries of the erf, Nunes has created a prismatic space to house large scale contemporary sculptures.

The space is light, airy and announces to the city that something new has arrived. This is echoed by the metal-clad box, raised up on stilts which articulates the pedestrian entrance.

Further into the site, the building is more restrained, mobilizing rectilinear geometries to accommodate a room for paintings, a small office and a generous restaurant, leading out onto a terrace.

The building responds well to its respective street edges and the outdoor spaces have been effectively designed. Materials are sophisticated and restrained comprising red face brick, white plastered walls, grey sheet metal and elegantly detailed steel work, allowing the powerful artworks to dominate.”
